DESCRIPTION:For video replay\, click HERE \nMr.Cohen will describe current US immigration policy\, examination the roots of the crisis on our southern border\, and raise questions about the current\, unsustainable situation. \nLawrence Cohen is a retired diplomat with the U.S. Department of State. During his Foreign Service career\, Mr. Cohen served in Mexico\, Honduras\, India\, Hungary\, Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Afghanistan. His Washington\, D.C.\, assignments included stints in the Office of Environmental Policy working on bilateral U.S.-Mexico and NAFTA issues\, and as State Department Desk Officer to the Inter-American Development Bank. Mr. Cohen has also served on short-term Foreign Service assignments in Erbil\, Iraqi Kurdistan Region; Tunis; Jeddah; and Kuwait. \nMr. Cohen created the Foreign Service Institute’s Afghanistan pre-deployment training program\, facilitated Afghan training for USAID personnel\, and developed diplomatic tradecraft training for the South Sudanese Foreign Ministry in Juba. Mr. Cohen served as the Retiree Vice President on the Governing Board of the American Foreign Service Association (2013-15). He delivered a presentation on Afghanistan to the Reading World Affairs Council in September 2008. \nMr. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Mideast Studies from Dickinson College and his Masters of Arts degree in International Relations\, specializing in Middle East Affairs from the University of Chicago. SUMMARY:Alice Paul: Women's Suffragist with Hallie Vaughan
DESCRIPTION:Alice Paul was a vocal leader of the 20th Century women’s suffrage movement. Born on 1/11/1885 in Mount Laurel\, NJ\, she was brought up with the Quaker traditions of gender equality and working to improve society. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1905 and would earn 4 more degrees in her lifetime. She joined the National American Women’s Suffrage Association and led the Washington DC Chapter. After splitting with NAWSA and forming the National Women’s Party\, she organized parades and pickets\, concentrating on a national effort to achieve the passage of women’s right to vote.  The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was passed by Congress June 4\, 1919\, ratified by the required three-fourths passage of the states August 18\, 1920 and became law August 26\, 1920.\nWith the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment\, Alice Paul focused on equal rights first as a proposed  Constitutional amendment and then as legislation to guarantee women  protection from discrimination in education\, employment and all other pursuits in life.  She  spent her long  life advocating for these and other women’s issues.  She died in Moorestown\, New Jersey\, July 9\, 1977. \nHallie Vaughan was born in Erie\, PA\, but moved to Berks County at age 12. She graduated from Wilson High School\, Slippery Rock University and Gratz College. She taught for 31 years in the Muhlenberg School District\, teaching mostly third and fourth grades. It was during this time that she became interested in women’s history\, incorporating lessons and activities into her classroom routine. After retiring\, she continues to research\, portray and speak about American Women who have been instrumental in United States history. She teaches a course at Alvernia’s Seniors College\, is a docent at the Berks County History Center\, volunteers for the Berks County Veteran’s Affairs Office\, is actively involved with the Berks County Daughters of the American Revolution and with the upcoming Berks Suffrage 2020 Celebration set for next year. DESCRIPTION:For video playback Part 1\, click HERE\nFor video playback Part 2\, click HERE \nBayan Sami Abdul Rahman is the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the United States of America. \nKey to her role are strengthening ties between Kurdistan and the United States\, advocating her government’s position on a wide array of political\, security\, humanitarian\, economic\, and cultural matters and promoting coordination and partnership. Prior to her US appointment in 2015\, Ms. Abdul Rahman was the High Representative to the United Kingdom. She was elected to the Leadership Council of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 2010. \nBefore her career in public service\, Ms. Abdul Rahman worked as a journalist for 17 years. She began her career on local newspapers in London and won the Observer Newspaper’s Farzad Bazoft Memorial Prize in 1993\, which led her to work at The Observer and later at the Financial Times. She worked for the FT in Britain and in Japan\, where she was Tokyo Correspondent. \nHer late father\, Sami Abdul Rahman\, was a veteran of the Kurdish freedom movement\, joining the Kurdistan Democratic Party in 1963 and playing a critical leadership role in the Kurdish and Iraqi opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime. He held the post of Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and General Secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Sami Abdul Rahman was killed alongside his elder son Salah and 96 others in a twin suicide bombing in 2004. \nMs. Abdul Rahman was born in Baghdad. Her family briefly lived in Iran in the mid-1970s before moving to Britain in 1976. SUMMARY:Terror Finance: The War Behind the War on Terror with John Cassara
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: Hillcrest Racquet Club \nJohn Cassara began his 26 year government career as an intelligence officer during the Cold War. He later served as a Treasury Special Agent in both the U.S. Secret Service and US Customs Service where he investigated money laundering\, trade fraud and international smuggling. He was an undercover arms dealer for two years. Assigned overseas\, he developed expertise in Middle East money laundering\, value transfer and underground financial systems. Mr. Cassara pioneered the concept of trade transparency units (TTUs) and has worked to demonstrate the link between trade fraud and underground financial systems. He also worked six years for Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and was later detailed to the Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Mr. Cassara’s final assignment was with Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (TFI). Since his retirement\, he has consulted for both government and industry. He has lectured in the United States and around the world on a variety transnational crime issues. Mr. Cassara testified four times before Congressional committees on various topics related to threat finance. He was denied a higher education by the communist regime for political reasons. Instead\, he trained and worked as a plumber before joining a preparatory protestant school and later the theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990\, he initially was the chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee which oversaw the dissolution of the Ministry of State Security at the Stasi headquarters and served as the secretary of the Special Committee for the dissolution of the Stasi of the East German Parliament. After reunification\, Gill became spokesman and head of the research division of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi-Files before studying law in Berlin and Philadelphia. After holding positions in the Federal Ministry of the Interior and at the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin\, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During Federal President Joachim Gauck’s term from 2012-2017\, he was state secretary and chief of staff of the President. Since August 2017\, he has been the German Consul General in New York.

DESCRIPTION:Mr. Cohen will summarize current US immigration policy\, examine the roots of the crisis in our southern  border\, and  draw some conclusions  about  the present dysfunctional situation. \nLawrence Cohen is a retired U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Officer.  During his State Department career\, Mr. Cohen was posted overseas in Mexico\, Honduras\, India\, Hungary\, Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Afghanistan.  His Washington\, D.C.\, assignments included stints in the Office of Environmental Policy working on NAFTA issues and as State Department Desk Officer to the Inter-American Development Bank.  Mr. Cohen has also served on short-term Foreign Service assignments in Erbil\, Tunis\, Jeddah\, and Kuwait.   \nMr. Cohen created the Foreign Service Institute’s Afghanistan familiarization training program\, facilitated Afghan pre-deployment training for USAID personnel\, and developed diplomatic tradecraft training for the South Sudanese Foreign Ministry in Juba.  Mr. Cohen served as the Retiree Vice President on the Governing Board of the American Foreign Service Association (2013-15).   He delivered a presentation on Afghanistan to the Reading World Affairs Council in September 2008.  \nMr. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Mideast Studies from Dickinson College and his Masters of Arts degree in International Relations\, specializing in Middle East Affairs from the University of Chicago. \nFor reservations: call 610-275-7880 or email contactus@wacreading.org. \nCost: $10.00

What will happen? Will this deadline be met? Or will the UK and EU postpone it\, prolonging the uncertainty? Will there be a ‘No-Deal Exit\,’ with potentially disastrous consequences? A so-called ‘Soft Exit\,’ leaving Britain still partly tied to the EU? Or could Brexit be cancelled entirely\, with a ‘Breturn?’ In any case\, the looming deadline is already having a serious impact on Britain and its partners. This talk will explore many questions\, although answers may be more difficult to find. \nDr. Newnham received his BA from Penn State University and his MA and PhD from UCLA. He has taught since 1995 at the Berks College of Penn State. He teaches courses in several subfields of Political Science\, including International Relations\, Comparative Politics\, and American Government. His research interests center on the role of economic linkage (sanctions and incentives) in International Relations. DESCRIPTION:The last decade has ushered in important changes for women: Entrepreneurship among women has risen steadily\, more women have access to financial and other vital services\, and women’s social mobility has increased. Lauren Hendricks will discuss how we can build on these gains to ensure more women are given the opportunity and resources to succeed and transform their families and their communities. \nLauren Hendricks is the Executive Vice President for Global Programs at Grameen Foundation. She was previously Executive Director for the Access Africa initiative at CARE\, where she led the development of financial inclusion programs and innovative solutions to reach the poorest people in Africa. In this role\, she partnered with banks\, microfinance institutions\, mobile network operators\, and others in the private sector to adapt products and services to meet the needs of the poor\, and to ensure that participants benefitted from new\, digital financial services. Lauren also served as Director of the Economic Development Unit for CARE USA\, where she provided strategic direction and technical leadership for more than 100 active microfinance and enterprise development programs in 54 countries. Before joining CARE\, Lauren was a Program Specialist at the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector (IRIS) at the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the development of low-cost tools to assess the poverty outreach of USAID funded micro enterprise development programs. Lauren currently serves on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee for MicroVest\, a capital management firm investing in microfinance institutions. Hof has been a soldier\, diplomat\, CEO\, author\, and the Director of the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.  He is currently on the faculty of Bard College and is a Nonresident Senior Fellow of the Hariri Center. A native of New York\, Ambassador Hof received a BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and an MA in National Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School.  He studied Arabic in Tunisia and\, as a US Army officer\, served overseas in Vietnam and Lebanon.  He concluded his military service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.  In the private sector he would become CEO of AALC Ltd.\, an international business consulting firm\, and would later establish a Syria practice at the Atlantic Council’s Hariri Center\, before becoming the Center’s Director in 2016. Ambassador Hof has written extensively on Middle Eastern political and security issues.  His published works have focused on Arab-Israeli boundary and water disputes and the Syrian crisis.  He served on the Department of Defense commission that investigated the 1983 bombing of the US Marine Corps barracks in Beirut\, drafting portions of the final report.  He was chief of staff of the 2000-2001 Sharm el-Sheikh Fact-Finding Committee (investigating the October 2000 Palestinian intifada) and principal drafter of the report submitted by former US Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell to President Bush and Secretary of State Powell.  He received the rank of ambassador in 2012 while serving as advisor to the Secretary of State on political transition in Syria. DESCRIPTION:How the Untapped Power of Women and Girls Can End World Poverty\nSusan Markham\nSusan Markham most recently served at the Unites States Agency for International Development (USAID) as the Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment. In this position\, she advised Agency leadership on gender policy issues\, led cross-sectoral program efforts in resilience\, adolescent girls’ education and energy\, and represented the Agency to the White House and other departments\, governments\, civil society organizations and private partners. Previously\, she led the efforts of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) a non-partisan organization\, to increase women’s political participation globally as voters\, activists\, candidates and officeholders. In this role\, she was especially proud of her work in Afghanistan\, Iraq and Yemen to help women find and use their voices in their countries. \nSusan worked earlier in her career in U.S. politics bringing to life her Master’s thesis that focused on women running for political office. At EMILY’s List\, she ran the Political Opportunity Program (POP) that recruited\, trained and supported women running for office at the state and local office. She also managed the Campaign Corps program that brought young people into the political process to engage them in elections. \nSusan now works and lives in Washington\, DC with her family and two dogs. SUMMARY:The Continuing Impact of Environmental Issues and Changes in the World Climate with Cathy Curran Meyers & David Osgood
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Curran Myers\, JD\nCathy Curran Myers is a member of the faculty of Alvernia University\, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental sustainability\, public policy\, conflict resolution\, leadership and law\, and serving as the program coordinator for the MA in Leadership degree. Prior to her appointment at Alvernia\, Ms. Myers was the Executive Director of the Bucknell University Environmental Center for interdisciplinary research\, scholarship and teaching of environmental perspectives and sustainability. Ms. Myer’s career in environmental law and policy spans three decades and includes executive level management in government\, business\, and academia. \nHer government service included serving as Deputy Secretary for Water Management in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP)\, where she shaped the water policy of the commonwealth from 2003-2009. During her tenure Ms. Myers represented Governor Rendell on interstate water resource agencies\, from the Great Lakes to the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River Basin. In 2003 Ms. Myers had the distinction of leading the Pennsylvania delegation in the international negotiations that culminated in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact and Sustainable Water Resources Agreement. \nIn addition to 20 years of public service\, Ms. Myers spent a decade practicing environmental law as a partner in a major Philadelphia law firm\, and launched and led their Harrisburg office. \nShe received her BA in Environmental Economics and an MA degree in Environmental Biology from Smith College and her JD from Dickinson School of Law . Ms. Myers is trained as a mediator\, and is the immediate past Chair of the City of Reading Environmental Advisory Council. \nDavid Osgood\nDavid received his PhD in Environmental Science from University of Virginia. His research has focused on natural marsh development on Mid-Atlantic and SE US barrier islands with an emphasis on hydrology\, nutrient dynamics\, and their influence on the developing plant community. His background also includes study of Phragmites and other non-native plant species and their impact on the marsh ecosystem. More recently\, he conducts research on restoration of headwater streams and floodplain wetlands of coastal watersheds of the Mid-Atlantic US. He has traveled regularly throughout Latin America where he teaches and conducts research into conservation of natural resources in a cultural context. His 34 year government career includes employment in CIA as a Technical Operations Officer\, Special Agent in the US Department of State\, Bureau of Diplomatic Security\, and a Senior Intelligence Officer in Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Mr. Eftimiades held positions in analysis\, human and technical intelligence collection\, and program management. He had overseas assignments in Vienna\, Frankfurt\, Moscow\, London\, and Tokyo. His long career in DIA includes senior assignments as the Chief of Counterterrorism Operations\, Transnational Issues Division\, Futures Division\, and Space Division. He has been awarded the National Intelligence Council Achievement Award and DIA Director’s Intelligence Award – that agency’s highest recognition of achievement. He distinguished himself numerous times in the senior ranks of the intelligence and defense communities. As a subject matter expert Nick was called upon to provide Congressional testimony and briefings to the Cox Commission\, the Joint Economic Committee\, President’s Commission on the Moon\, Mars\, and Beyond\, and individual meetings with Congressional Members and staff. \nMr. Eftimiades was also a Senior Research Fellow at King’s College War Studies Department\, London UK. He has an M.S. Strategic Intelligence\, National Defense Intelligence College; and a B.A. East Asian Studies\, George Washington University. Mr. Eftimiades has authored books and number of scholarly articles on national security\, technology\, and space issues. Nick’s book “Chinese Intelligence Operations\,” is an examination of the structure\, operations\, and methodology of the intelligence services of the People’s Republic of China. To date\, it remains the only scholarly analysis of China’s intelligence services and operational methodology. \nNick is a frequent lecturer and public speaker on future technology\, space\, and national security issues. DESCRIPTION:International Business: Brentwood Industries\nBrentwood began putting down roots in foreign countries nearly 20 years ago starting with Thailand. Today\, we operate in the Czech Republic and India also with a Mexico facility soon to open. Even our US based operations enjoy sales to foreign countries amounting to approximately 30% of the whole\, including over 30 years of selling to China. \nMany of our product relate to infrastructure such as power generation\, water and waste-water processing and storm-water management. These are things that all countries need\, especially countries that are advancing in their desire to live as we do. Our opportunities abroad come from interest in these products. As demand builds in a region over time\, we begin to consider the need to be local. Despite having preeminent products in our niches\, we will always encounter both indigenous competition and competition from other foreign companies\, whether European or Chinese\, that results in price pressure. Often\, we choose to be a pioneer in establishing local manufacturing and setting customer expectations on performance and value rather than wait to become a “me too”. This requires a long term view and patience. \nBrentwood is more comfortable in foreign lands and cultures than many US companies. My parent\, sister and I emigrated from Denmark. Since Denmark is so small\, its economic development is dependent on commerce with foreign countries. Operating abroad is natural. Brentwood has become a magnet for foreign born workers because we need their language skills\, cultural understanding and openness. Also\, emigrating is an inherently entrepreneurial act. Entrepreneurship is something we value.
