SUMMARY:The Palestinian and Israeli Conflict: An Historical Perspective with Tod Witman
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL EVENT 12:00 NOON APRIL 10TH \nMr. Witman will review the 4\,000  year history of the region\, expanding upon the well-received presentation he made as part of the panel discussion on the current Palestinian and Israeli conflict hosted by the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading January 17\, 2024 at the McGlinn Conference and Spirituality Center\, Alvernia University. \nTod Witman is a 32 year veteran educator in Berks County’s public schools\, with the last 21 served at Schuylkill Valley High School.  He is a longtime teacher of Advanced Placement World History and World Cultures courses and has taught almost every Social Studies course offered at SVHS.  He has participated in multiple highly selective institutes designed for high school history teachers\, including several from the Foreign Policy Association in New York City and the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia.  These range in topics from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Iran’s interactions with the West to Russia’s foreign policy aspirations since the collapse of The Soviet Union.  In addition to teaching high school history\, he is a scoring leader for the College Board’s annual AP World History Reading.  He has also served as an AP World History consultant for the College Board and the National Math and Science Initiative via a program that delivers Advanced Placement content to traditionally underserved student populations in New York City.  He founded the World Affairs Club and Model UN Team at Schuylkill Valley High School and has worked closely with the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading to bring international learning opportunities to students across Berks County. \nThis event will be held VIRTUALLY at 12:00 Noon April 10th.\nClick here to register for this event now.

He holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Geography from Johns Hopkins University and a graduate degree in Environmental Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:India and what its Democracy means to the US and the World with Dr. Daniel Markey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daniel Markey is a senior advisor on South Asia at the United States Institute of Peace. He is also a senior fellow at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Foreign Policy Institute. \nFrom 2015-2021\, Dr. Markey was a senior research professor in international relations at SAIS\, where he launched and led the Master of Arts in Global Policy degree program and taught courses in international politics and policy. From 2007-2015\, Dr. Markey was a senior fellow for India\, Pakistan\, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. From 2003 to 2007\, Dr. Markey was a member of the U.S. State Department’s Policy Planning Staff. His work focused on U.S. strategy in South Asia\, especially Pakistan and India. Prior to government service\, he taught in the Department of Politics at Princeton University and served as executive director of Princeton’s Research Program in International Security. Earlier\, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard’s Olin Institute for Strategic Studies. \nDr. Markey has two decades of academic\, think tank\, and government experience focused on international relations and U.S. policy in Asia\, with a particular focus on South Asia and China’s evolving role in the region. Dr. Markey earned his bachelor’s in international relations from Johns Hopkins and his doctorate in politics from Princeton. \nDr. Markey is the author of China’s Western Horizon: Beijing and the New Geopolitics of Eurasia (Oxford University Press\, 2020). The book assesses the evolving political\, economic\, and security links between China and its western neighbors\, including Pakistan\, India\, Kazakhstan\, Russia\, Saudi Arabia\, and Iran. He is also the author of No Exit from Pakistan: America’s Tortured Relationship with Islamabad (Cambridge University Press\, 2013) as well as numerous reports\, articles\, book chapters\, and opinion pieces. DESCRIPTION:Delegations from Reading’s two sister cities\, Reading\, England and Reutlingen\, Germany are coming to Reading March 12-17 to join in the celebration of the 275thanniversary of Reading’s founding.  The World Affairs Council of Greater Reading is pleased to hold a breakfast program as  part of the week long set events  planned  for the visits. \nThe program  will be Thursday\, March 16 at the DoubleTree by Hilton.  Registration and breakfast\, 7:15-8:00 a.m. Program: 8-9 a.m. \nThe program with be in the form of a moderated panel discussion with a representative from each delegation discussing the value each perceives in the sister city partnership and a  representative of Reading discussing the significance of the 275th anniversary and the importance of the sister city relationships.  Question and Answer with the audience will follow with everything concluding sharply at 9 a.m. \nThe DoubleTree has heavily discounted the cost for the breakfast as part of its contribution to the 275th anniversary celebration. She is the author of War and State Formation in Ancient China and Early Modern Europe (Cambridge University Press\, 2005). DESCRIPTION:Chris Miller is assistant professor of international history at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and co-director of the school’s Russia and Eurasia Program. He is author of  Putinomics: Power and Money in Resurgent Russia (2018) and The Struggle to Save the Soviet Economy (2016).  \nHe has previously served as the associate director of the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy at Yale\, a lecturer at the New Economic School in Moscow\, a visiting researcher at the Carnegie Moscow Center\, a research associate at the Brookings Institution\, and as a fellow at the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Academy. DESCRIPTION:Abdullah Konak is a Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University\, Berks.  Dr. Konak received his degrees in Industrial Engineering\, B.S. from Yildiz Technical University\, Turkey\, M.S. from Bradley University\, and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to his current position\, he taught at Auburn University.  Dr. Konak also held visiting positions at Lehigh University\, Cornell University\, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. \n  \nDr. Konak’s primary research interest is in the modeling\, analysis\, and optimization of complex systems using computational intelligence combined with techniques from probability and statistics and from Operations Research.  He has studied a broad range of topics including network design\, reliable system design\, cybersecurity\, facilities design\, green logistics\, production management\, and data sciences.  Dr. Konak has published papers in leading journals such as Operations Research Letters\, Informs Journal on Computing\, Europan Journal of Operations Research\, Computers and Operations Research\, IIE Transactions\, IEEE Transactions on Reliability\, International Journal of Production Research\, and Production Economics.  He has been a principal investigator in sponsored projects from the National Science Foundation\, the National Security Agency\, the US Department of Labor\, and Venture Well. \nDr. Konak currently teaches courses on Database Management Systems\, Cybersecurity\, Agent Based Modelling\, and Entrepreneurship. SUMMARY:Red Sea Security with Dr. Randall Fegley
DESCRIPTION:A political historian at Penn State Berks College\, Randall Fegley teaches courses in African\, European and Middle Eastern history\, ethnic conflict in Africa and international law. Joining the Penn State system in 1988\, he specializes in the study of mass trauma\, especially long-term conflicts\, gross human rights violations and prolonged disasters in Rwanda\, Equatorial Guinea\, Uganda\, South Sudan and Sudan. He lived\, taught and completed Ph.D. research in Sudan from 1980 to 1984 and has returned to work there and in other African countries numerous times. In November 2003\, he received Penn State Berks’ Beaver Community Service Award for restoring schools in war-torn Kajo Keji County as part of a program of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem. He has been particularly active in the Sudan Studies Association\, the leading scholarly organization on Sudan. Host of the SSA’s 22nd annual conference in May 2002 and a member of the association’s board from 2003 to 2007\, he has also served as the organization’s president and executive director. As the coordinator of Penn State’s four-year degree program in Global Studies\, he set up internship programs in Rwanda and India. He earned his BA from Moravian College in 1994 and later earned his Masters and PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) where he focused on China’s history and politics. He currently holds the position of Professor in the History Department of Kutztown University where he teaches classes in World History\, general East Asia\, and more focused classes on Chinese history with a focus on the late-19th and early-20th century. The focus of Dr. Stanley’s research work is on the secular activities of missionaries in China.
