DESCRIPTION:Vaccination and Global Health – the State of the Science\nTracey Scheirer\, MSN\, CMSRN\, CNE\, RN\nTracy Fogarty Scheirer has worked in a variety of nursing settings including in medical/ surgical\, critical care\, community health\, OB/GYN\, and pediatrics since receiving her BS in Nursing from Albright College in 1987.  As a result of her Masters work in community health nursing\, Tracy founded and is the chairperson of the Berks Immunization Coalition\, a vaccine advocacy group of local health professionals\, business professionals\, and community members.  The Coalition has worked for eight years to promote vaccination throughout the lifespan in various community outreach activities.  Tracy has presented locally and nationally on the topic of immunizations at a variety of different venues.  She has been a full time member of the Alvernia University nursing faculty since 2011 and is in the final phase of her PhD dissertation at Widener University.  Her research topic centers on the concepts of moral distress\, moral integrity\, and duty orientation in nursing and nursing education. \n  \nTo Register:\nCall (610) 375-7880 or email contactus@wacreading.org \nCost to attend is $10 for members and non-members.

Located in the beautiful Blue Mountains of northern Berks County\, Pennsylvania\, the sanctuary annually attracts thousands of visitors\, young scientists\, and researchers from across the globe to further their knowledge of birds of prey and partake of the beautiful setting which is Hawk Mountain. \nDr. Keith Bildstein came to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in 1992 and retired in 2018 as the Director of the Sarkis Acopian Center for Conservation and Learning. A Ph.D. in zoology\, Dr. Bildstein is the author of more than 150 peer reviewed publications and several books\, including Migrating Raptors of the World: their ecology and conservation (2006). DESCRIPTION:The last decade has ushered in important changes for women: Entrepreneurship among women has risen steadily\, more women have access to financial and other vital services\, and women’s social mobility has increased. Lauren Hendricks will discuss how we can build on these gains to ensure more women are given the opportunity and resources to succeed and transform their families and their communities. \nLauren Hendricks is the Executive Vice President for Global Programs at Grameen Foundation. She was previously Executive Director for the Access Africa initiative at CARE\, where she led the development of financial inclusion programs and innovative solutions to reach the poorest people in Africa. In this role\, she partnered with banks\, microfinance institutions\, mobile network operators\, and others in the private sector to adapt products and services to meet the needs of the poor\, and to ensure that participants benefitted from new\, digital financial services. Lauren also served as Director of the Economic Development Unit for CARE USA\, where she provided strategic direction and technical leadership for more than 100 active microfinance and enterprise development programs in 54 countries. Before joining CARE\, Lauren was a Program Specialist at the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector (IRIS) at the University of Maryland. Her research focused on the development of low-cost tools to assess the poverty outreach of USAID funded micro enterprise development programs. Lauren currently serves on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee for MicroVest\, a capital management firm investing in microfinance institutions. DESCRIPTION:Mr. Cohen will summarize current US immigration policy\, examine the roots of the crisis in our southern  border\, and  draw some conclusions  about  the present dysfunctional situation. \nLawrence Cohen is a retired U.S. Department of State Foreign Service Officer.  During his State Department career\, Mr. Cohen was posted overseas in Mexico\, Honduras\, India\, Hungary\, Nigeria\, Brazil\, and Afghanistan.  His Washington\, D.C.\, assignments included stints in the Office of Environmental Policy working on NAFTA issues and as State Department Desk Officer to the Inter-American Development Bank.  Mr. Cohen has also served on short-term Foreign Service assignments in Erbil\, Tunis\, Jeddah\, and Kuwait.   \nMr. Cohen created the Foreign Service Institute’s Afghanistan familiarization training program\, facilitated Afghan pre-deployment training for USAID personnel\, and developed diplomatic tradecraft training for the South Sudanese Foreign Ministry in Juba.  Mr. Cohen served as the Retiree Vice President on the Governing Board of the American Foreign Service Association (2013-15).   He delivered a presentation on Afghanistan to the Reading World Affairs Council in September 2008.  \nMr. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Mideast Studies from Dickinson College and his Masters of Arts degree in International Relations\, specializing in Middle East Affairs from the University of Chicago. \nFor reservations: call 610-275-7880 or email contactus@wacreading.org. \nCost: $10.00

William Fulbright. Administered by the Department of State\, it is one of several United States cultural exchange programs whose goal is to promote intercultural relations\, cultural diplomacy\, and intercultural competence between citizens of the United States and other countries. The program has awarded approximately 370\,000 scholarships to American and foreign students since the inception. \nMr. Waldo Alvarado\, Director of Equity and Diversity for the Reading School District\, will further review the history of the Fulbright Scholarships. A native of El Salvador\, Mr. Alvarado was a Fulbright Scholar in 1989/1990 at the University of Pennsylvania. \nJoining Mr. Alvarado to share their experience as Fulbright Scholars are Dr. Michael Masko and Dr. Katherine Lloyd Diaz. One hundred years later\, women are realizing an increasingly stronger presence in elective offices across Pennsylvania and the nation. \nA panel of three Berks County elected officials\, moderated by Lynn Brown\, president\, World Affairs Council of Greater Reading\, will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing women today in seeking and holding elected office. \nState Senator Judy Schwank represents Pennsylvania’s 11th Senatorial District\, which includes the City of Reading and many of its surrounding boroughs and townships. Since her appointment in 2011\, Senator Schwank has championed issues that directly affect women and children. \nSandy Graffius has served as Berks County Controller since 2004. She brought 25 years of business ownership to the position. The controller supervises the fiscal affairs of the county\, including a review of all audits\, bills and claims\, and reports regularly on the fiscal conditions of the county. \nJohanny Cepeda-Freytiz was appointed to a seat to represent District 6 on the Reading City Council in January\, 2019\, and then elected to a full term in November\, 2019. DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC \nMr. Wessner will be presenting his personal account of the impact of China’s entry into the world economy and\, possibly\, challenge some of the conventional views that most Americans have about China.  His presentation will focus on the history and governance of China\, recent evolution of business and what this has meant for the people living in China – – and the rest of the world. \nOriginally from Kutztown Pennsylvania\, Tom Wessner has had a broad international career in Finance\, Supply Chain and Business Development.  Tom joined Ford Motor Company in 1986 after achieving his Master’s in Business from Penn State University.  Since then he has lived and worked around the world for Ford\, Mazda\, Tesla and Hawaiian Airlines.  His last two business ventures were in Chinese-funded electric car startups as one of the founding executives.  Besides living in Japan and Mexico\, each for over 6 years\, Mr. Wessner was part of the Ford team that made the first entries into China in 1993.  Tom has seen\, first-hand\, the transformation of China from a third world developing nation to the high-tech global economic power that China is today. \nTo Register:\nCall (610) 375-7880 or email contactus@wacreading.org\nCost to attend: $10.00 \n

SUMMARY:Ukraine:  A Personal Perspective with Dr. Timothy Medianick
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Medianick\, Boulevard Dental Associates\, Kenhorst\, is a native of Ukraine. One of 10 children\, his family immigrated to the United States when he was 13. A naturalized U.S. citizen\, Dr. Medianick is a graduate of Messiah College and the Temple University of School of Dentistry. \nDr. Medianick has returned to Ukraine twice in recent years to perform much needed dental services. A planned trip in May 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic. He has treated soldiers in a dangerous area of conflict in the eastern border of Ukraine. In May 2019\, he provided dental services to 80 children at the Mykhaylivka Orphanage in the Cherkasy region of central Ukraine. \nDr. Medianick will share his perspective on the current political\, social and economic conditions in Ukraine today. He will relate compelling\, human stories about treating the soldiers and the children in the orphanage. \nDr. Medianick and his wife Ann (a native of Berks County) are the proud parents of three children.
